Overhead Crane & Hoist Periodic Inspection
Category: Lifting Equipment | Frequency: Monthly / Quarterly
Standard operating procedure for inspecting wire rope integrity, upper/lower limit switches, hook throat opening, and brake wear on heavy industrial overhead bridge cranes.
Standard Operating Procedure
Step 1: Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) main runway disconnect.
Step 2: Inspect wire rope along entire length for kinking, crushing, bird-caging, or broken wires.
Step 3: Measure hook throat opening and compare against baseline to check for stretching. Inspect safety latch for proper spring tension.
Step 4: Remove LOTO and perform function test on all pendant controls (hoist, trolley, bridge) without a load.
Step 5: Test upper and lower limit switches at slow speed to verify the hoist stops automatically.
Step 6: Inspect bridge and trolley wheel flanges for excessive wear, tracking issues, or flat spots.
Step 7: Check hoist brake holding capacity and inspect brake lining thickness (if accessible).
