Industrial Helical Gearbox Preventive Maintenance

Routine maintenance procedure for heavy-duty industrial gear reducers, including oil sampling, desiccant breather replacement, and mechanical seal inspection.
Standard Operating Procedure
Step 1: Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) motor and driven equipment.
Step 2: Clean the exterior of the gearbox, especially around the breather, sight glass, and shaft seals.
Step 3: Extract a live oil sample from the sample port (or mid-level drain) for laboratory wear-metal and viscosity analysis.
Step 4: Drain and flush gear oil if lab results dictate or if operating hours have exceeded the OEM threshold. Refill with specified ISO VG gear oil.
Step 5: Inspect and replace the desiccant breather if the silica gel has changed color (indicating moisture saturation).
Step 6: Inspect input and output shaft seals for weeping, scoring on the shaft, or excessive heat.
Step 7: Check torque on all mounting and foundation bolts.
Step 8: Remove LOTO, test run, and use a temperature gun or thermal imager to verify normal operating temperatures at bearing housings.
