Standard operating procedure for checking bearing housing vibration, evaluating shaft runout, and executing precision laser alignment on heavy industrial centrifugal pumps.
Standard Operating Procedure
Step 1: Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) motor breaker and verify zero energy state.
Step 2: Inspect baseplate and foundation for cracking or degradation.
Step 3: Mount magnetic base dial indicator to evaluate shaft runout. Maximum allowable tolerance is typically 0.002 inches.
Step 4: Check for soft foot on all four motor feet using a dial indicator or feeler gauges. Correct any soft foot exceeding 0.002 inches before final alignment.
Step 5: Inspect coupling insert/grid for wear, fretting, or lubrication breakdown.
Step 6: Mount laser alignment heads. Record as-found readings and adjust using precut stainless steel shims to meet required tolerances.
Step 7: Torque hold-down bolts to specification and record final alignment values.
Step 8: Remove LOTO, bump motor for rotation (if uncoupled), and monitor startup vibration levels.
